Macro photographers in particular know the problem very well. Your image composition is perfectly set up and you are wondering whether you might want to shoot in portrait format. If I want to change the settings on the tripod head now, the whole image composition will need to start again from the beginning. With an L-bracket, only the orientation of the image format changes.
